How do women take care of themselves?
Empower heard from a woman who shared a typical day and how she deprives herself of “me time.”
It’s what women do – we are always last on the “to do” list.
I know you’re supposed to take care of yourself before everyone else so you can be a better mom – but the reality is that’s not how it works.
My situation might be a little unique because I swim at the gym. So it’s not really something I could do at home. At least not in the winter! I have a back injury that prevents me from doing anything else.
Oh and when I say swim – I mean high intensity water aerobics I’m no Michael Phelps. But it means I’m held to a class schedule.
I also work at home. I can’t even imagine if I had a commute. I would never get anything done.
So a typical day. Work from 8-5 nonstop. Only a few breaks to eat. I answer 100+ emails per day, have conference calls, work on projects and generally work my but off. I also travel at least once a month for 2-3 days.
My daughter has after school programs (drama/art ect) that end at 5:15. I finish work at 5 run to the school to get her get home at 5:45 and start dinner.
Since I’m trying to actually make her something healthy it takes about an hour to cook. In a perfect night I get out of the house at 7, class starts at 7:45 and I do my best not to throw up in the pool.
Get home at 8:45 and assist with any homework, clean something, maybe do some laundry and then if I’m lucky sit down and watch a show. Then off to bed.
And if there is anything that comes up – I need to pack for a trip, run to the grocery store, go to a doctor’s appointment, do my taxes ect… the first thing to go is my time at the gym.
I’m not going to tell me daughter no dinner tonight or I can’t help her with homework because I need to go to the gym or workout at home. It just doesn’t work that way.
And don’t get me started about asking my husband for help. That just ends up being more work!!
